Addressing Pharmacy Deserts McKesson is launching Project Oasis, a new initiative aimed at advancing health equity for at-risk populations in underserved communities. There are many opportunities to earn continuing education during sessions focused on health equity, communitypharmacy and specialty pharmacy.
Provider status would enable pharmacists to provide services permitted by state pharmacy practice acts and in collaborative agreements with physicians. As providers, the 250 to 300 retail clinics currently operating in medically underserved areas have a more significant opportunity for expansion and growth.
This work includes: Collaborating with the Patient Advocate Foundation to identify improvements needed for SDOH screening and interventions in communitypharmacies; Addressing the relevance and impact of medication adherence measures; and Filling knowledge gaps on the existing landscape of SDOH and the role of pharmacies and pharmacists.

But we can't forget that at the pharmacy level, also sometimes that's the last touchpoint in a communitypharmacy that somebody sees a patient who's taking those medications. Everywhere along those touchpoints, health care providers can certainly make an intervention there.
Yet, many graduates will enter our communitypharmacies—or, as I refer to them, primary care pharmacy practices. We need to recognize that community-located pharmacists are, indeed, assuming roles as primary care pharmacists. 3,4 Now more than ever, we need additional PharmD graduates in the direct-to-career route.
