Five for Friday October 20: Celebrating Success in Advancing Medication Use Quality

We are excited to host members in two weeks at the 2023 PQA Leadership Summit and PQA Convenes: Advancing Medication Therapy Management Quality Measurement. This year's summit will advance measure modernization, while the convening event will address the state of MTM practice and opportunities to evolve MTM measurement.

Leadership Summit attendees are invited to participate in both events. PQA Convenes starts at 8:00 a.m. ET on Thursday, November 2, and the summit starts later that day at 3:00 p.m. ET. Learn more about the summit below.

We also highlight our members' perspectives on medication delivery, managing obesity, and connecting medical and pharmacy records. If you have news you'd like for us to spotlight in an upcoming Five For Friday, send us an email!

Delivering Medications by Drone

Amazon Pharmacy customers located in College Station, Texas, can now have their prescription medications delivered by drone. Eligible customers can access more than 500 medications, including treatments for common conditions such as asthma and the flu, and have a drone drop them at their doorstep. The medication will arrive in less than 60 minutes at no additional cost.

Managing Obesity as a Chronic Condition
In a session at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy's Nexus 2023 that focused on the obesity epidemic, Justin Bioc from Devoted Health spoke about how managed care pharmacies can address disparities in health by hiring individuals who are native speakers, with the same dialect, as their patients. Bioc said that weight loss is a small part of obesity. There is still so much to consider and learn about obesity in ethical, racial, and health disparities in varying communities.

Connecting Patient Medical and Pharmacy Records
Kristen Whelchel, Research and Patient Care Improvement Pharmacist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center Pharmacydiscussed medically integrated dispensing specialty pharmacies, the expanded role of the pharmacist and how these pharmacies have access to medical and pharmacy records to facilitate a comprehensive approach to patient treatment. "One of the great things that helps us with that is that we do have access to the patient's medical records as well as their pharmacy records. So we can really just close the loop for the patient so that they are getting all of their care in one place."
