Target closing 9 stores across 4 states

Due to an increase in theft and organized retail crime, Target announced a decision to close 9 of its stores across four states, effective Oct. 21.

In a statement posted to its website, the retailer states that the safety of its team and guests is of its utmost importance, and before reaching this decision the company invested in strategies to prevent and stop theft and organized crime in its stores.

“We cannot continue operating these stores because theft and organized retail crime are threatening the safety of our team and guests, and contributing to unsustainable business performance. We know that our stores serve an important role in their communities, but we can only be successful if the working and shopping environment is safe for all,” the company stated.

Some of these methods included adding more security team members, using third-party guard services and implementing theft-deterrent tools across its businesses.

The stores that will be closing include:

• New York City: 
  • Harlem: 517 East 117th Street 
• Seattle: 
  • Seattle University Way: 4535 University Way NE 
  • Seattle Ballard: 1448 NW Market Street, Suite 100   
• San Francisco/Oakland: 
  • SF Folsom and 13th Street: 1690 Folsom Street
  • Oakland Broadway and 27th: 2650 Broadway
  • Pittsburg: 4301 Century Blvd 
• Portland, Ore.:
  • Portland Galleria: 939 SW Morrison Street
  • Portland Powell: 3031 SE Powell Boulevard
  • Portland Hollywood: 4030 NE Halsey Street

The retailer also noted that it will be partnering with all eligible team members to offer them an opportunity to transfer to other Target locations.
