Notably, the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in the pharmaceutical industry was 2,794 in Q1 2024, versus 4,321 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 3% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Contemporary Amperex Technology filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the pharmaceutical industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 28 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 34 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Johnson & Johnson with 17 environmental sustainability patent filings, F. Hoffmann-La Roche (14 filings), and Chinese Academy of Sciences (13 filings) in Q1 2024.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 26% share of total patent filings

The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the pharmaceutical industry in Q1 2024 was in the US with 26%, followed by China (22%) and Japan (14%). The share represented by the US was 4% higher than the 22% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
