A Traveler’s Guide To Beating Burnout In Belize

I’ve always been a go-getter so being still mentally and physically is something that I’ve always struggled with. The thing is, I’ve come to acknowledge and accept that being in “go mode” all the time isn’t healthy for me. The fast and high-pressure pace can lead to burnout.

Slowing down is definitely something that I’m working on. That’s why I jumped at the opportunity to go on a weeklong vacation to Belize. I did something that I’ve never done before… I took 7 whole days off from my duties at the hospital and from my business. Why? Because I WAS BURNED OUT!

According to Positive Psychology, “burnout occurs when an individual experiences too much stress for a prolonged period and is left feeling mental, emotionally, and physically exhausted.” Sound familiar? Yeah. Not only that, these individuals can be less productive at work, show reduced concern for others, and have increased absenteeism.

For high-performing individuals (like me) it can seem as if I should keep pushing ahead, however, it’s vital to my physical and psychological well-being to take breaks. This can look like:

  1. reading a book
  2. listening to music
  3. talking to a friend
  4. doing breathing exercises
  5. stepping away from my work area during the day
  6. taking time off

My quest to break free from burnout took me to Belize.

Villa life is sweet.

I stayed at the ultra-luxurious Mahogany Bay Resort & Beach Club, Curio Collection by Hilton. This property consists of 60 acres of land located on the stunning island of Ambergris Caye, Belize, near the town of San Pedro. I was able to socially distance myself while enjoying all the amenities that the resort had to offer.

My home for the week was an authentic Belizian villa with a back porch and relaxing living room. I also had access to a pristine swimming pool, a private beach club, and mouthwatering food. Of course, I explored the town of San Pedro to experience the local culture.

I tapped into my adventurous side and explored the town of San Pedro for a taste of the Belizian culture. I shopped a produce stand for fresh fruit, picked up snacks from a grocery store, and drove like a local.  Golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation here.

I am embracing the importance of sitting still and slowing down.

Burnout is not something to aspire to and is not a badge of honor to wear with pride. My time in Belize allowed me to beat the burnout I was feeling and find effective solutions to keep it away.
