Masks On- ALWAYS!

Dr. Jamie HardyHealth

A face mask is THE must have fashion accessory of 2020! From prints, to solids, to logos, and even those with catchy slogans- masks are everywhere. Think about it. How many masks have you accumulated since the coronavirus pandemic began? Oh yes! I’m here for it. Wearing a mask is a MUST for slowing the spreading of this virus. It’s important to remember that wearing a mask helps to protect people around you, including those at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

The spread of coronavirus can be reduced when facial coverings are used along with other preventive measures such as social distancing, frequent handwashing, and disinfecting high touch surfaces.

To put it simply- coronavirus is an invisible enemy that is proving to be disproportionately deadly for African American and Latino communities. It’s impossible to know who is or is not a carrier without testing. Some people are asymptomatic and are unknowingly spreading the virus to friends, family members, neighbors, and even co-workers. That’s why you must ALWAYS wear a mask whenever you leave the house. Be sure to follow the recommendations of public health experts and scientists.

You may be wondering if the recommendation to wear a mask is backed by scientific data? Yes, it certainly is. Masks have demonstrated the ability to block respiratory droplets. There is just one catch. The mask must be worn properly.

According to the CDC, the mask should:

  • Fit snugly, but comfortably against the side of the face
  • Be secured with ties or an ear loop
  •  Allow for unrestricted breathing
  • If fabric, be machine washable and dried without damaging or changing the shape
  • Cover the nose and the mouth
