Whether they’re in a World Cup match or an Olympic race, injuries can be devastating for elite athletes — particularly when they prove difficult to treat quickly. “Sports medicine today is still extremely primitive,” said Kentaro Onishi, an assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and doctor on the International Olympic Committee.
